Bengal BJP Chief Announces Ayushman Bharat Implementation Plan
Bharatiya Janata Party's West Bengal president, Samik Bhattacharya, declared on Thursday that the central government's flagship Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme will be introduced in the state within the next few months, contingent upon the BJP being voted into office in the upcoming elections. Bhattacharya emphasized that this rollout would specifically benefit thousands of migrant workers who currently cannot access health insurance benefits through the state's existing Swasthya Sathi card.
Exclusive Event in Durgapur Highlights Healthcare Gap
Speaking at a private hospital event in Durgapur, Bhattacharya pointed out that West Bengal remains the only state in India where the Ayushman Bharat card has not been implemented. He detailed the limitations of the current Swasthya Sathi system, noting that migrant workers are particularly disadvantaged as they cannot utilize its benefits outside the state. "Any tourist can avail the benefits of the Ayushman scheme, but our own migrant workers are left out," he stated, underscoring the urgency of adopting the central scheme.
Bhattacharya projected a clear timeline for the initiative, asserting that the Ayushman Card will be adopted in West Bengal starting from July this year, following the formation of a new government. This move aims to bridge the healthcare accessibility gap and provide comprehensive coverage to all residents, including transient populations.
Political Accusations and Future Electoral Battles
Later in the day at Kulti, Bhattacharya shifted focus to broader political criticisms, alleging deep-rooted corruption within the current Trinamool Congress administration. He warned, "In 2026, Trinamool will have to fight against the people. The government is sunk deep into corruption," signaling a contentious electoral landscape ahead. These statements highlight the BJP's strategy to leverage governance issues and healthcare promises as key campaign pillars in the state.
The announcement aligns with the BJP's national agenda of expanding Ayushman Bharat's reach, which offers health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. Bhattacharya's remarks underscore a significant policy shift that could reshape healthcare delivery in West Bengal, pending electoral outcomes.
