Bihar Advances Sustainable Farming with New Soil Testing and Equipment Centers
In a significant move to revolutionize agricultural practices, Bihar's State Agriculture Minister Ram Kripal Yadav inaugurated 32 sub-division level soil testing centers across the state on Thursday. The initiative, launched via remote control from Krishi Bhavan in Mithapur, Patna, aims to promote farming based on soil health and curb the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers, which are known to degrade soil and reduce crop yields.
Promoting Scientific Farming and Soil Health
During the inauguration ceremony, Minister Yadav emphasized the critical role of these centers in enabling farmers to adopt scientific methods. "The primary objective of these soil testing facilities is to provide farmers with accurate soil health data, allowing them to tailor their farming practices accordingly," he stated. By encouraging the use of organic fertilizers, we can maintain soil vitality, which in turn boosts crop production and land productivity. He warned against the overreliance on chemical inputs, highlighting their detrimental effects on soil degradation.
Expanding Access to Farm Equipment
In addition to the soil testing centers, Yadav inaugurated 12 custom hiring centers strategically located at state quality seeds production centers across 12 districts. These centers, situated in Bhabhua, Dhanarua, Nawada, Khiriyawan, Sipaya, Piprakothi, Pusa, Halsi, Sikandra, Odehara, Kumarkhand, and Bualdah, offer farmers access to 25 types of specialized agricultural equipment. This initiative is designed to support small-scale and local farmers by providing affordable rental options for machinery, thereby enhancing efficiency in farm activities.
Digital Transformation in Agriculture
The event also marked the launch of the digital agriculture directorate at Krishi Bhavan. This new directorate will focus on:
- Delivering real-time benefits from government schemes to farmers.
- Conducting digital crop surveys to monitor agricultural trends.
- Maintaining a comprehensive database for estimating crop coverage during kharif and rabi seasons, as well as tracking production and land productivity.
- Implementing innovative crop management strategies based on data analytics.
- Issuing digitized soil health cards to farmers, further supporting informed decision-making.
This digital push is expected to streamline agricultural operations and provide farmers with timely information and resources, fostering a more resilient and productive farming ecosystem in Bihar.
