Bihar Government Advances Defence Corridor Plan with NDA Experts
Bihar Moves Forward on Defence Corridor Development

Bihar Government Takes Concrete Steps Towards Defence Corridor Establishment

The Bihar government has initiated significant steps toward establishing a defence corridor in the state, marking a major development in the region's industrial landscape. Deputy Chief Minister and State Home Minister Samrat Choudhary announced on Wednesday that he held a meaningful meeting with senior officers and experts from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) who were on a study tour from the Ministry of Defence in Patna.

Detailed Discussions on Defence Corridor Plans

During the meeting, comprehensive discussions were held regarding the plans, possibilities, and various aspects related to the development of the proposed defence corridor in Bihar. Samrat Choudhary emphasized that the discussions covered multiple dimensions of the ambitious project, which aims to transform the state's industrial profile.

The state government, in its budget for 2026-27 presented on Tuesday, officially announced the establishment of both a defence corridor and a semiconductor manufacturing park in Bihar. This dual announcement represents a strategic move to position Bihar as a hub for advanced manufacturing and technology sectors.

Employment Generation and Industrial Development

Samrat Choudhary highlighted that the NDA government is committed to providing employment opportunities to the youth of Bihar. With this objective in mind, various industries are being actively promoted across the state. "A vast industrial corridor is being developed in the Dobhi area of Gaya district, which will become a major centre of development for the state," he stated.

The Deputy Chief Minister further explained that "the construction of the defence corridor will also help Bihar establish its identity in the defence production and technology sector." This initiative is expected to create numerous job opportunities and attract significant investment to the region.

Government Approval and Committee Formation

The Nitish Kumar government, in its first cabinet meeting after government formation, had already approved the formation of a committee specifically tasked with establishing both the defence corridor and the semiconductor manufacturing park. This early approval demonstrates the administration's commitment to these transformative projects.

Currently, only two major defence corridors exist in the country, located in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The establishment of a third corridor in Bihar would position the state as a significant player in India's defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Existing Defence Infrastructure in Bihar

Bihar already possesses some defence manufacturing infrastructure that could support the new corridor development:

  • An ordnance factory is currently operating in Nalanda district
  • This factory is the only facility in the country that produces the bi-modular charge system, which is used to fire shells from Bofors and other cannons
  • A gun factory operates in Munger district

These existing facilities provide a foundation upon which the new defence corridor can build, potentially creating synergies between established operations and new investments.

The defence corridor initiative represents a strategic effort to diversify Bihar's industrial base beyond traditional sectors. By focusing on high-technology defence manufacturing and semiconductor production, the state aims to create sustainable employment opportunities while contributing to national security objectives. The project's success could potentially transform Bihar's economic landscape and establish the state as a significant contributor to India's defence manufacturing capabilities.
