Solar Champions of Bihar Celebrated at Patna's Solar Mela 2026 for Achieving Zero Electricity Bills
In a significant event highlighting Bihar's push towards renewable energy, twenty-four beneficiaries from the state who successfully reduced their electricity bills to zero through the adoption of rooftop solar systems were honored on Thursday at the 'Solar Mela 2026'. Organized by the Patna Electric Supply Undertaking (PESU), the fair served as a platform to recognize and inspire efforts in sustainable energy practices.
Recognition for Vendors and Energy Department Employees
The event also felicitated the top 10 vendors responsible for installing the highest number of rooftop solar systems across Bihar, acknowledging their crucial role in expanding solar infrastructure. Additionally, five employees from the energy department, who have been actively associated with the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, were honored for their dedication and service.
Inauguration and Key Address by Energy Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh
Manoj Kumar Singh, the Energy Secretary and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, inaugurated the fair. In his speech, he drew parallels between different forms of national service, stating, "Some serve by wearing the uniform of the armed forces, while others contribute in different forms. Ordinary citizens can also serve the nation in their own way." He emphasized that global warming remains a serious global challenge and described the solar scheme as a historic step towards addressing it.
Singh praised the Solar Champions, saying, "Your contribution to controlling pollution and promoting green energy demonstrates your dedication to the nation." He highlighted that under the initiative, participants can avail completely free electricity, with both the central and state governments making every possible effort to connect common people with this scheme. Singh directed banks to process applications within 10 days and avoid seeking unnecessary documents to streamline the process.
Objectives and Impact of the Solar Mela
PESU General Manager Dilip Kumar explained that the mela aims to help citizens choose suitable vendors and technologies for rooftop solar installations, fostering informed decision-making. The event underscores Bihar's commitment to reducing carbon footprints and promoting energy independence through solar power.
By honoring beneficiaries, vendors, and officials, Solar Mela 2026 not only celebrates achievements but also encourages wider adoption of rooftop solar systems, aligning with national goals for a greener future.
