Bihar's Historic Solar Leap: 185 MW Solar & Battery Storage

Patna: In a landmark development for Bihar's energy sector, the state is set to receive 185 MW of solar energy coupled with 282 MWh of battery storage power from the Kajra project in Lakhisarai. This announcement was made by Bihar's Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav following the signing of a power purchase agreement (PPA) by the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) on Wednesday.

A Historic Achievement for Bihar's Energy Landscape

The Kajra project stands out as the country's largest battery-based power initiative, heralding a new era in renewable energy integration. Minister Yadav described the day as historic, emphasizing that receiving power from Kajra represents a significant achievement for the state. He highlighted that the battery-based storage system will play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Project Phases and Implementation Timeline

The first phase of the project, involving 185 MW solar energy and 282 MWh battery storage capacity, is currently in its final stages of completion. Work on this phase commenced with a work order issued on July 1, 2024, and successfully achieved grid connection to the 132 kV network by December 31, 2025.

Looking ahead, the second phase is already under construction and will add an additional 116 MW of solar energy along with 241 MWh of battery capacity. This expansion comes with an investment of Rs 1,055 crore. By January 2027, the Kajra plant is projected to reach a total capacity of 301 MW solar energy and 523 MWh battery storage.

Enhancing Energy Supply and Grid Stability

This ambitious project is expected to significantly strengthen Bihar's energy supply while ensuring grid stability during periods of peak demand. The integration of solar power with advanced battery storage technology will provide a reliable and sustainable energy source, reducing dependency on conventional power generation methods.

Government's Commitment to Renewable Energy

During the announcement, Minister Yadav also released a booklet titled 'The Power Year 2025 - Bihar Energy Highlights,' which documents key achievements from 2025. He revealed that the state government is making a substantial investment of Rs 50,000 crore in the solar energy sector, underscoring its commitment to renewable energy development.

"This project is not just about providing electricity, but is also an inspiration for green energy and the future," the minister stated. He added that the power purchase agreement marks a significant milestone for Bihar in its journey toward self-reliance in the energy sector.

Official Perspectives on the Project

Manoj Kumar Singh, Energy Secretary and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), noted that the signing of the PPA has paved the way for commercial operations to commence. He also mentioned that approximately 3,500 people expressed their consent during a public hearing organized by the Bihar State Pollution Control Board for the Pirpainti Thermal Power Plant construction.

Mahendra Kumar, Managing Director of South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited and BSPGCL, emphasized that the PPA signing for the Kajra Solar Power Project transcends mere formality. "It is a celebration of fulfilling a promise made to the people of Bihar," he remarked.

The event was attended by Rahul Kumar, Managing Director of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited, along with other senior officials, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this transformative initiative.
