Cabinet Greenlights Major Restructuring and Extension of Jal Jeevan Mission

In a significant move to bolster rural water infrastructure, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday granted its approval for the comprehensive restructuring and reorientation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The mission's timeline has been extended to December 2028, accompanied by a substantial enhancement in financial allocation, with a total outlay now estimated at approximately Rs 8.7 lakh crore.

Focus on Service Delivery and Digital Governance

The revamped initiative, termed JJM 2.0, will pivot its focus towards ensuring reliable service delivery, underpinned by robust drinking water governance and a strengthened institutional ecosystem. This strategic shift aims to establish a sustainable piped potable water supply network across rural India.

A cornerstone of this restructured mission is the implementation of a uniform national digital framework named "Sujalam Bharat". Under this innovative system, every village will be assigned a unique Sujal Gaon/Service Area ID. This digital identifier will facilitate the comprehensive mapping of the entire drinking water supply system, meticulously tracking the journey from the water source right up to the household tap.

Financial Allocation and Central Support

The enhanced financial envelope of Rs 8.7 lakh crore represents a major commitment from the government. This total includes a central assistance component of nearly Rs 3.6 lakh crore. This marks a significant increase of over Rs 1.5 lakh crore compared to the approximately Rs 2.1 lakh crore approved for the mission during its initial phase in 2019-20.

Core Objective: Tap Water for Rural Households

The fundamental objective of the Jal Jeevan Mission remains steadfast: to provide assured, safe drinking water through functional household tap connections to every rural household in the country. The restructuring and extended timeline are designed to accelerate progress towards this critical goal, ensuring long-term sustainability and efficient management of water resources.

The approval signals a renewed and intensified push to address one of rural India's most pressing needs, leveraging technology and enhanced funding to create a lasting impact on public health and quality of life.
