Cabinet Greenlights Major Highway Project in Uttar Pradesh

The Union Cabinet, in a significant infrastructure push, has given its approval for the construction of a four-lane access-controlled National Highway-927 connecting Barabanki to Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh. The project, sanctioned on Wednesday, carries an estimated cost of Rs 6,969.04 crore and is designed to substantially improve connectivity across key economic and logistics hubs within the state, as confirmed by an official government statement.

Project Details and Implementation Mode

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) cleared this ambitious initiative, which will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). Spanning a total length of 101.515 kilometers, the highway development entails a civil construction cost of approximately Rs 3,485.49 crore. Additionally, a substantial allocation of Rs 1,574.85 crore has been earmarked specifically for land acquisition purposes to facilitate the project's smooth progression.

Employment Generation and Economic Impact

Officials have projected that the construction and associated activities of this highway will create significant employment opportunities. It is estimated to generate 36.54 lakh person-days of direct employment and a further 43.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment. This influx of jobs is expected to provide a considerable boost to local economic activity, stimulating growth in the surrounding regions.

Design Features and Travel Benefits

The upgrade of the Barabanki–Bahraich corridor is specifically intended to address existing geometric deficiencies, eliminate sharp curves, and alleviate congestion in built-up areas across both districts. Engineered as an access-controlled four-lane highway with continuous service roads, the project will strategically bypass major habitations. This design is anticipated to increase average travel speeds dramatically, reducing the travel time between the two locations to approximately one hour.

Enhanced Safety and Regional Development

Authorities emphasize that the improved corridor will not only enhance road safety but also contribute to better fuel efficiency and lower vehicle operating costs. By strengthening regional mobility, the highway is poised to foster socio-economic development across Uttar Pradesh. The project aims to deliver seamless connectivity to a network of economic, social, and logistics nodes throughout the state.

Multi-Modal Integration and Connectivity

Furthermore, the upgraded route will significantly improve multi-modal integration by linking three critical economic nodes, two social nodes, and twelve logistics nodes. It will also facilitate enhanced connectivity with the Rupaidiha Land Port and nearby airports, enabling faster and more efficient movement of both goods and passengers across the region.

Strategic Cross-Border and Regional Significance

Upon completion, this corridor is expected to emerge as a pivotal cross-border trade and transit route between India and Nepal via the Nepalganj border, improving access to the Rupaidiha Land Port. The project is also likely to enhance connectivity to more remote districts such as Bahraich and Shravasti. It will support the PM GatiShakti national master plan for economic and logistics infrastructure, while promoting agricultural trade, tourism, cross-border commerce, and attracting regional investment, as detailed in the official statement.
