Major MSP Boost for Odisha Farmers as Centre Approves Rs 1,428 Crore Procurement
In a significant development for agricultural support in eastern India, the Central government has granted approval for the procurement of five major crops from Odisha at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The total MSP outlay for this initiative is set to exceed a substantial Rs 1,428.3 crore, marking a crucial financial injection for the state's farming community.
Ministerial Announcement Following High-Level Virtual Meeting
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made the official announcement on Wednesday after conducting a comprehensive virtual meeting with Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, who concurrently holds the agriculture portfolio in the state government. The discussion focused on reviewing Odisha's procurement demands for various agricultural produce and establishing a framework for transparent implementation.
The five crops approved for MSP procurement are:
- Moong (green gram)
- Urad (black gram)
- Groundnut
- Sunflower
- Mustard
Detailed Breakdown of Approved Procurement Quantities and Values
The Centre has sanctioned specific procurement targets for each crop with precise financial allocations:
- Moong: 34,492 metric tonnes at an MSP value of Rs 302.4 crore
- Urad: 1.19 lakh metric tonnes worth Rs 931.2 crore
- Groundnut: 20,219 metric tonnes valued at Rs 146.8 crore
- Sunflower: 2,210 metric tonnes with an MSP value of Rs 17.06 crore
- Mustard: 4,964 metric tonnes worth Rs 30.77 crore
Transparency and Direct Farmer Benefits Emphasized
Minister Chouhan emphasized that the procurement process must be conducted with complete transparency and honesty, with purchases made directly from farmers without intermediary involvement. He stressed that MSP benefits should reach agricultural producers promptly through a transparent system, ensuring that actual farmers receive direct relief and support.
"The Centre would ensure full support to Odisha's farmers," Chouhan stated during the announcement, while underscoring the importance of preventing middlemen from benefiting from the procurement system. He called for continuous monitoring mechanisms to verify that only genuine farmers are able to sell their produce at the guaranteed MSP rates.
Implementation Framework and Special Focus on Sunflower Cultivation
Official sources confirmed that the procurement will be undertaken under the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan for a designated 90-day period. The Odisha government is reportedly already working on developing a point-of-sale-based procurement system to facilitate efficient implementation.
Minister Chouhan specifically welcomed the continued cultivation of sunflower in Odisha, noting that this particular crop has been disappearing from many agricultural regions across the country. He assured that the Centre would extend all possible support to expand sunflower acreage and production in the state, including providing scientific and technical assistance if required by farmers and agricultural authorities.
This comprehensive procurement approval represents a substantial commitment to supporting Odisha's agricultural sector, ensuring price stability for key crops, and providing direct economic benefits to the state's farming community through transparent, monitored implementation of MSP mechanisms.
