Scheme Extension and Market Expansion Plans

In a move that promises long-term stability for the sector, Dr Likhi announced that the Centre is actively considering extending the PMMSY scheme for another five years. This potential extension underscores the government's dedication to continuous support and development of aquaculture.

Efforts are also intensifying to expand domestic marketing channels and introduce aqua products into new sectors. Strategic initiatives are underway to include these products in the supply chains of the Armed Forces and the Mid-Day Meal scheme, thereby creating reliable and substantial demand for farmers' output.

Key Policy and International Exposure Initiatives

The Union secretary addressed several other crucial areas where the government is taking proactive steps:

  • GST Reduction Discussions: Active discussions are in progress regarding the reduction of GST rates in the aqua sector, which could significantly lower operational costs and boost profitability for farmers.
  • International Study Tours: Plans are being formulated to organize study tours that will expose farmers to international aquaculture practices, fostering knowledge exchange and adoption of global best practices.
  • Waste Utilization Efforts: Steps are being taken to effectively utilize 1.6 million tonnes of shrimp waste through collaborations with private entities, including Ice Landing. This initiative aims to promote value addition and enhance sustainability within the industry.

Recognition of Andhra Pradesh's Contribution

Dr Likhi took the opportunity to commend the aqua farmers of Andhra Pradesh for their remarkable contribution to the national output. The state's farmers have supplied an impressive 6.4 million tonnes of aqua products, playing a pivotal role in meeting domestic demand and supporting the economy.

The comprehensive announcements made by Dr Likhi signal a robust and multi-faceted approach by the Central government to empower aqua farmers, ensure sectoral growth, and integrate sustainable practices for a prosperous future in aquaculture.
