CM Office Steps In to Secure Aadhaar for 166 Tribal Students in Karnataka
CM Office Intervenes for Aadhaar of 166 Tribal Students

The Karnataka Chief Minister's secretariat has intervened to ensure Aadhaar cards for 166 tribal students studying in state-run Ashrama schools in Chamarajanagar district. This action came in response to a Times of India report published on April 22, which highlighted that these students were yet to receive their Aadhaar due to the non-availability of their birth certificates.

Official Intervention

In a letter addressed to the Secretary of the Tribal Welfare Department and the Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar district, the Officer on Special Duty to the Chief Minister stated that she has been directed by the Chief Minister to take immediate action and submit an action-taken report. The intervention underscores the government's commitment to resolving the issue without further delay.

Progress on Birth Certificates

The District Tribal Welfare Officer confirmed that during the National Lok Adalat held in December 2025, birth certificates were received for all affected students. Consequently, steps have been initiated to issue Aadhaar cards to every student in the Ashrama schools. This development marks a significant milestone in ensuring that tribal children have access to this essential identity document.

Activist Response

Activists have expressed gratitude to the department for assuring early issuance of Aadhaar cards. Nagendra Ganiga Mangala, President of the Adivasi Hitarakshana Samiti in Chamarajanagar, stated, "We hope government agencies will ensure that our students receive their Aadhaar without any further delay." The activists' appreciation reflects the community's relief and optimism following the intervention.

Broader Context

The lack of Aadhaar cards can hinder access to various government schemes and services, including scholarships, midday meals, and other welfare programs. The CM's secretariat's proactive step is expected to streamline the process and prevent such bottlenecks in the future. The district administration has been directed to expedite the remaining formalities and submit a compliance report at the earliest.
