Delhi Government to Request Rs 1,200 Crore from Centre for Major Road Infrastructure Overhaul
In a significant development for the capital's infrastructure, Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh announced on Tuesday that the department will seek substantial financial support from the central government for comprehensive road strengthening and expansion projects across the city.
Substantial Funding Request Under CRIF
The minister revealed that Delhi will request approximately Rs 1,200 crore from the Centre under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) to execute large-scale road improvement initiatives. This funding request comes as part of the BJP government's commitment to the end-to-end comprehensive re-development and improvement of 1,440 kilometers of roads throughout Delhi, a key electoral promise that is now moving toward implementation.
Budget 2026-27: A Next-Generation Vision
Singh characterized the Union Budget 2026-27 as a "next-generation budget" that he believes will not only strengthen India's economic foundation but also accelerate Delhi's development trajectory. "This Budget is not about what we gain today, but about what India will become tomorrow," the minister stated. "It lays the roadmap for a developed India by 2047, and a developed Delhi alongside it."
Progress on Existing Road Projects
Officials provided updates on the current status of road development projects:
- Delhi has received Rs 803 crore in central assistance from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways under CRIF - marking the first time the capital has received such substantial funding through this mechanism
- The PWD has already awarded work contracts for recarpeting, strengthening, and resurfacing of 300 kilometers of roads
- Redevelopment of approximately 550 kilometers of roads is expected to be completed by March of this year
- Another 600 kilometers of road stretches will be taken up for redevelopment in the next financial year, requiring additional central assistance
Enhanced Coordination Between Centre and State
The minister highlighted improved collaboration between the central and state governments as a key factor in accelerating project execution. "Delhi is now witnessing faster execution of projects owing to close coordination between the Centre and the state government," Singh noted. He contrasted the current situation with previous political dynamics, stating: "Earlier, Delhi's development was repeatedly blocked by political confrontation. Today, work is being carried out with focus, transparency, and speed."
Expected Benefits of Road Infrastructure Investment
According to the PWD minister, the enhanced central backing will deliver multiple benefits to Delhi residents:
- Significant improvement in road quality and durability
- Reduction in traffic congestion across the capital
- Enhanced commuter safety through better road infrastructure
- Overall improvement in transportation efficiency
Governance Reforms and Additional Initiatives
Speaking about broader governance improvements, Singh emphasized that the past eleven months have brought stability, accountability, and efficiency to Delhi's administration. He noted that previously stalled projects have been restarted and public services have seen measurable improvements.
In addition to the major road projects, the PWD has appointed a consultant for the beautification of flyovers and foot overbridges across Delhi, indicating a comprehensive approach to urban infrastructure enhancement that addresses both functional and aesthetic aspects of the city's transportation network.
