Delhi Government to Present Green Budget for 2026-27 Amid Pollution Concerns
In response to ongoing pollution challenges, the Delhi government is planning to introduce a green budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. An official stated, "Globally, several countries have adopted green or climate budgeting practices to align fiscal policy with environmental goals. In India, too, a few states have also begun taking similar steps." Delhi is currently studying these models to explore how a similar system could be adapted locally. Key focus areas are expected to include pollution control, clean energy expansion, water conservation, biodiversity protection, and other sustainable development initiatives.
Systematic Tracking and Efficiency in Environmental Spending
Officials emphasized that the green budget will help the government systematically identify and track spending on environment-related programmes. "By making allocations for green initiatives and monitoring such allocations, the government would be able to assess the effectiveness of its policies and ensure that public funds are used efficiently to address environmental challenges," said an official.
