Gadkari Greenlights Major Road Project in Himachal Pradesh to Enhance Regional Connectivity
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has granted in-principle approval for the construction of the Palampur-Maranda-Sujanpur-Hamirpur road under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF). This significant infrastructure initiative is poised to transform transportation in the region by improving connectivity between Palampur, Chandigarh, and New Delhi.
Project Details and Strategic Importance
The road project, estimated to cost around Rs 200 crore, will be a crucial link connecting interior areas of Kangra and Hamirpur districts. It is expected to considerably reduce travel distance and time between Hamirpur and Palampur, making commuting more efficient for daily travelers, traders, and tourists. The approval follows consistent efforts by Rajya Sabha MP Indu Bala Goswami, who emphasized the strategic and public importance of this route.
Indu Bala highlighted that the road would act as a lifeline for approximately five lakh people in the region, providing improved, safer, and faster travel options. The project includes upgrading all bridges along the route to two lanes, ensuring better durability and capacity to handle increasing traffic demands.
Economic and Tourism Benefits
Beyond enhancing connectivity, the Palampur-Sujanpur-Hamirpur road is likely to have a positive impact on tourism and local businesses. Better road access to scenic and rural areas will attract more visitors, thereby boosting hospitality, transport, and small-scale industries. Additionally, it will facilitate easier movement of agricultural produce, benefiting farmers and supporting the local economy.
Gadkari appreciated Indu Bala's efforts in presenting a well-documented case and highlighting the urgency of the project. He also acknowledged her role in pursuing key infrastructure projects in Himachal Pradesh, including important national highway corridors like Pathankot-Mandi and Chandigarh-Manali.
Future Implications and Regional Development
This road project is part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, opening new avenues for economic growth. By reducing travel bottlenecks and enhancing links to major cities like Chandigarh and Delhi, it is expected to spur development in the region, making it more accessible for trade and tourism.
The approval marks a significant step forward in addressing transportation challenges faced by residents and promoting sustainable development in the area.
