Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Inaugurates Key Dairy Infrastructure in Melghat
In a significant move to bolster the dairy sector in tribal areas, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated a 2,000-litre bulk milk cooler at Dharani in Melghat on Sunday. The event, conducted via video conferencing, marks a pivotal step towards enhancing milk production and supporting local livelihoods in this remote region.
Strengthening Dairy Infrastructure and Employment
Speaking at the inauguration, Gadkari emphasized that the new facility is designed to provide fresh momentum to milk production while creating local employment opportunities and improving income prospects for farmers. The bulk milk cooler is expected to streamline milk collection processes and prevent spoilage, addressing a critical challenge faced in the isolated pockets of Melghat.
"Dairy development is essential for the socio-economic progress of Melghat, as the region requires sustained livelihood support," Gadkari stated. He highlighted that this initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen rural employment and enhance health indicators across multiple levels.
Focus on Fodder Management and Veterinary Support
To ensure sustainable milk production, Gadkari outlined strategies for improved fodder management. He suggested the cultivation of Napier grass and maize, along with the preparation of silage, to guarantee year-round availability of green fodder. Increased milk production will directly translate into higher profits for farmers, he added, underscoring the economic benefits.
Furthermore, Gadkari called for enhanced veterinary support, stressing the need for scientific cowshed management and the adoption of advanced breeding techniques, such as embryo transfer, to boost productivity. He set an ambitious target of achieving 1 lakh litres of milk production from Melghat.
Broader Dairy Projects and Health Initiatives
In addition to the local efforts, Gadkari referenced a major 550 crore dairy project underway in Nagpur. "Under the project, milk will be collected from Vidarbha and Marathwada for manufacturing value-added products such as paneer, cheese, and ice cream," he explained, indicating a larger-scale push to transform the regional dairy industry.
Alongside the dairy initiatives, the 'Shishu Sanjeevani' programme was launched in 50 villages, targeting children aged 3 to 6 years and those enrolled in anganwadis. This programme, planned for expansion to 320 villages, aims to address malnutrition in the region, aligning with broader health and development goals.

The inauguration ceremony and milk producers' meet at Dharani saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Minesh Shah, chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), managing director C P Devanand, Marathvarhad Milk Producer Company president Varsha Chavan, Sampoorna Bambu Kendra Head Nirupama Deshpande, and social worker Dr Ravi Kolhe, among others.
