Gorakhpur's Rural Women Achieve Economic Self-Reliance Through NRLM Initiative
Government officials in Gorakhpur have announced that both the central and Uttar Pradesh state administrations are intensifying efforts to foster economic self-reliance among women through the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). This scheme has become a pivotal program for enhancing the livelihoods of rural women across the district, marking a significant shift from traditional household roles to active economic participation.
Massive Mobilization: Over 21,000 Self-Help Groups Formed
According to official data, a total of 21,106 women self-help groups (SHGs) have been established in Gorakhpur under the NRLM framework. These groups involve approximately 299,892 women, who are now contributing to family income through various entrepreneurial activities. In the financial year 2025-26 alone, 629 new SHGs were created, with 7,950 women joining as new members, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner (Self-Employment) Neerja Gupta.
Diverse Livelihood Activities Driving Income Generation
Women associated with the mission are engaged in a wide array of livelihood ventures, moving beyond conventional responsibilities. Key activities include:
- Vegetable cultivation and mushroom farming
- Honey production and livestock rearing
- Agriculture and spice processing
- Artificial jewellery making and bag stitching
- Soft toy production and file-folder making
- Nutrition (pustahar) production and dress stitching
This diversification allows women to tap into multiple revenue streams, strengthening their economic footing.
Substantial Financial Support Bolstering SHG Operations
Financial assistance has been a cornerstone of the mission's success. To date, 18,446 SHGs in Gorakhpur have received revolving funds totaling nearly Rs 30 crore, including 1,006 groups that secured assistance in the current financial year. Additionally, 15,558 groups have been supported through the Community Investment Fund (CIF), which helps enhance their operational capabilities.
Bank Credit Linkage Fuels Economic Expansion
Officials emphasize that cash credit linkage (CCL) from banks has been instrumental in scaling up the economic activities of SHGs. Under this facility, banks offer a credit limit of up to Rs 6 lakh—starting with Rs 1.5 lakh in the first year, potentially increasing to Rs 3 lakh and then Rs 6 lakh based on consistent transactions and timely repayments. In Gorakhpur, 12,210 SHGs have already availed CCL, enabling women members to invest in livelihood projects and solidify their financial independence.
The concerted efforts under NRLM are not only transforming individual lives but also revitalizing the rural economy of Gorakhpur, setting a benchmark for women-led development initiatives nationwide.
