Gujarat Government Establishes Committee to Secure LNG Supply Amid Middle East Crisis

The Gujarat government has taken decisive action to address potential liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply disruptions by forming a high-level committee under the chief secretary. This committee will coordinate closely with the Union government to ensure adequate LNG availability for households across the state.

Proactive Measures to Prevent Domestic Shortages

State government spokesperson Jitu Vaghani addressed the media outside the assembly on Wednesday, emphasizing the committee's critical role. "The committee will coordinate with the Centre and continuously review the situation to ensure an adequate gas supply," Vaghani stated. He confirmed that the state government has been working closely with the Union government on this matter for some time.

In response to the escalating crisis in West Asia, the Gujarat government has implemented significant allocation adjustments. State Energy and Petrochemicals Minister Rushikesh Patel announced that industrial gas supply would be reduced by 50%, while fertilizer and milk processing units would see approximately 40% reductions. These measures are specifically designed to prioritize domestic consumers and prevent household shortages.

Assurances on Cooking Gas and International Diversification

Vaghani provided crucial reassurances regarding cooking gas availability. "The supply of cooking gas cylinders will not be disrupted," he affirmed, adding that both Union and state governments are working to secure about 80% of commercial gas cylinder supplies.

The spokesperson revealed strategic international procurement shifts to mitigate supply risks. "The Union government started placing advance orders for gas cargoes from West Africa and the United States instead of relying solely on Middle Eastern nations," Vaghani explained. "The new supplies are expected to start arriving in India shortly."

Addressing Public Concerns and Rumors

Vaghani directly addressed growing public anxiety about potential shortages. He urged citizens to disregard rumors about gas scarcity and specifically cautioned against hoarding behavior. "This is an international crisis, and necessary measures are being taken to prevent disruption," he emphasized, highlighting the coordinated governmental response to global energy market volatility.

The committee's formation represents a proactive approach to energy security management, with continuous monitoring and intergovernmental coordination as central components of the strategy to maintain stable LNG supplies throughout Gujarat during this period of international uncertainty.
