Himachal CM Sukhu Reviews Major Hydroelectric Project and Sustainable Agricultural Unit

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu conducted a comprehensive review of the 450-megawatt Shongtong-Karcham Hydroelectric Project during his two-day visit to Kinnaur district. The project, situated on the Satluj River, is a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at bolstering the state's energy security and economic growth.

Progress Inspection and Key Directives

Sukhu personally inspected essential components of the hydroelectric project, including the powerhouse, surge shaft, and barrage. He engaged with engineers and workers on-site to assess the construction status and address any challenges. The chief minister emphasized the need to accelerate construction efforts, setting a clear timeline for completion.

He directed officials to ensure the first phase is finalized by January 2027, with the entire project targeted for completion within the current financial year. According to Sukhu, approximately 75% of the work has already been accomplished, indicating significant progress.

Project Details and Economic Impact

Major civil structures, such as the barrage, head race tunnel, and powerhouse, are at advanced stages of development. Electro-mechanical works are being executed in a phased manner to ensure seamless integration. Once operational, the project is expected to generate around 1,579 million units of electricity annually.

This substantial energy output will significantly enhance the state's energy capacity and improve grid stability. Economically, the project is projected to contribute nearly Rs 900 crore annually to Himachal Pradesh's economy, providing a substantial boost to regional development and financial sustainability.

Innovative Geothermal-Powered Agricultural Facility

In addition to the hydroelectric project, Chief Minister Sukhu inspected the world's first geothermal-powered apple cold storage and fruit drying unit located at Tapari in Kinnaur district. This facility, with a capacity of 1,000 tonnes, has processed 16,963 kg of fruits over the past two years.

The project was developed under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation and an Iceland-based company. It utilizes geothermal heat instead of conventional electricity, offering a sustainable solution for local farmers.

Sukhu highlighted that this innovative approach sets a new benchmark in eco-friendly agricultural practices for the region. The site is notable for hosting the hottest thermal spring in the area, which provides the necessary geothermal energy for the facility's operations.

The chief minister's visit underscores the state government's commitment to advancing both renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.
