The Karnataka government has announced a 50% discount on pending traffic fines to encourage vehicle owners to settle their dues. The concession is available from June 21 to July 10, 2025, and applies to traffic e-challans registered before May 2026 as well as Transport Department cases dating back to 1991 through 2022. This initiative aims to clear a massive backlog of pending fines totaling Rs 2,827 crore.
Eligibility and Payment Methods
The discount covers all pending traffic e-challans issued before May 2026 and Transport Department cases from 1991 to 2022. Vehicle owners can pay the discounted fines through the Karnataka State Police (KSPS) app, KarnatakaOne centres, and other designated online platforms. The process is designed to be simple and accessible, allowing citizens to settle their dues conveniently.
Previous Success
This is not the first such scheme. A similar initiative in November 2023 proved highly successful, disposing of 77,41,050 cases and collecting Rs 201 crore in fines. During that period, 902 Transport Department cases were also resolved, generating Rs 29.66 lakh in revenue. The positive outcome of the 2023 scheme has prompted the government to reintroduce the discount.
Government Initiative
The decision follows a proposal by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) to clear pending cases. The KSLSA has been actively working to reduce the burden on the legal system by promoting alternative dispute resolution and encouraging out-of-court settlements. This discount scheme is seen as a step towards achieving that goal.
Vehicle owners are urged to take advantage of this limited-time offer to avoid higher penalties and potential legal action. The government hopes that the discount will lead to a significant reduction in pending fines and improve overall compliance with traffic rules.
