In a landmark event for Kerala's infrastructure development, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan personally carried out the first rock blast for the massive Rs 2,134-crore Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi tunnel road project at Maripuzha on Friday. The ceremonial detonation of explosives at the entrance of the 8.7-kilometer tunnel on the Kozhikode side officially commenced the ambitious project that will cut through challenging mountain terrain.

The significant blasting operation began only after the state government successfully obtained the crucial stage-II environmental clearance for the project. To ensure maximum security during this sensitive operation, officials implemented strict access controls, restricting entry to the site exclusively through authorized passes. Recognizing the public interest in this major infrastructure initiative, authorities arranged a live telecast of the entire event at Muthappanpuzha LP School, allowing citizens to witness this historic moment remotely.

Chief Minister Vijayan expressed profound satisfaction at initiating what he described as "Kerala's dream infrastructure project" amid exceptionally high public expectations. He presided over comprehensive briefings from key officials representing the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL), and the Public Works Department (PWD), who detailed various technical and operational aspects of the massive undertaking.
PWD Minister P A Mohamed Riyas, who presided over the formal event, emphasized the tunnel's transformative potential, stating it would have far-reaching impacts across the entire state of Kerala. He powerfully declared that the symbolic blast demonstrated the government's unwavering determination to overcome unnecessary controversies and obstacles that had previously surrounded the project.
Transportation Revolution and Connectivity Enhancement
Minister Riyas highlighted the project's practical benefits, explaining that the tunnel would eliminate hours of frustrating waiting during traffic blocks on the notoriously congested Thamarassery Ghat stretch. Once completed, travel time between Kozhikode and Wayanad is projected to be reduced dramatically to just 10 minutes. Furthermore, the minister emphasized that this infrastructure would significantly enhance connectivity between Kerala and Bengaluru, creating new economic opportunities and facilitating smoother interstate travel.
Technical Specifications and Environmental Safeguards
KIIFB Executive Director K P Purushothaman provided crucial technical details about the project, noting that the tunnel stretch primarily consists of strong charnockite rock formation, which makes it particularly suitable for tunneling operations while minimizing geological risks. The construction will employ the sophisticated New Austrian Tunneling Method, recognized for its efficiency and safety in challenging terrain.
Purushothaman further assured that all conditions stipulated in the environmental clearance would be strictly followed throughout the project's duration. KIIFB has proactively allocated Rs 40 crore specifically for environmental safeguards and has established comprehensive systems to address any challenges that may emerge during construction. Given the strong and stable rock formation, authorities anticipate completing the tunneling work within a four-year timeframe.
Project Management and Future Timeline
The project management structure designates KRCL as the executing agency through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), while Bhopal-based Dilip Buildcon has been contracted to carry out the actual construction works. The tunnel will feature four strategic access points, with tunneling operations from the Wayanad side scheduled to commence within the next month.
