India Announces Lifetime Free Railway Travel for Gallantry Medal Recipients
The Government of India has issued a significant order granting lifetime complimentary railway travel to recipients of gallantry medals, according to defence officials. This initiative represents a major recognition of the service and sacrifice of military personnel who have been honored for their bravery.
Comprehensive Travel Benefits for Awardees
The scheme provides free travel in First Class, 2 AC, or AC chair car compartments on all Indian Railways trains. Each gallantry medal recipient may be accompanied by one individual who will also travel free of charge, ensuring that awardees can be accompanied by family members or caregivers during their journeys.
For posthumous award recipients, the benefits extend to their parents or spouse. However, specific conditions apply: the spouse can continue to benefit from the scheme only until they remarry, while parents are eligible only if the recipient was unmarried at the time of their death.
Framework of Cooperation Initiative
In a related development, Indian Railways and the Army have launched a "Framework of Cooperation" initiative designed to expand post-retirement employment opportunities. This program specifically targets Agniveers and serving Army personnel who are transitioning to civilian life.
The initiative aims to:
- Smooth the transition to civilian careers
- Raise awareness about job prospects in the railway sector
- Create a comprehensive support system for retiring personnel
Reservation Quotas and Recruitment Processes
The employment framework establishes specific reservation quotas for former defence personnel:
- Ex-servicemen: 10% of Level-2 and above posts, plus 20% of Level-1 posts
- Retired Agniveers: 5% of Level-2 and above posts, plus 10% of Level-1 posts
For the years 2024 and 2025, a total of 14,788 posts have been reserved under this scheme, comprising 6,485 Level-1 positions and 8,303 Level-2 and above positions. Recruitment is conducted through Railway Recruitment Cells for Level-1 posts and Railway Recruitment Boards for Level-2 and above positions, utilizing competitive examination processes.
Accelerated Recruitment Measures
To expedite the filling of vacancies, ex-servicemen are being recruited as contract Pointsmen through streamlined processes. Currently, over 5,000 Level-1 posts are under active processing, and nine Railway Divisions have already signed Memorandums of Understanding with Army organizations to facilitate these hirings.
The framework also calls for enhanced coordination between Army recruiting bodies and Railway Divisions to accelerate recruitment timelines and ensure that qualified former defence personnel can quickly secure employment in the railway sector.
This dual approach of providing both travel benefits and employment opportunities represents a comprehensive effort by the Indian government to honor and support military personnel who have demonstrated exceptional bravery in service to the nation.
