According to official data released up to April 15, Lucknow has surpassed Surat to become the leading district in India for rooftop solar installations. This achievement is primarily driven by the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a central government initiative designed to promote residential solar power generation across the country.
Impressive Installation Figures Highlight Rapid Growth
The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) reports that 3,133 rooftop solar plants were installed in Lucknow by April 15 alone. Cumulatively, the district has now set up more than 87,000 rooftop solar systems, the highest number among all districts nationwide. Data from January to April indicates a consistent and steady rise in solar adoption within the state capital, reflecting a strong and growing trend toward renewable energy solutions.

Officials attribute this significant increase to several critical factors. Higher electricity consumption in urban areas, fueled by the expanding use of electrical appliances, induction cooktops, and electric vehicles, has created a greater demand for alternative power sources. "The availability of subsidies from both the central and state governments, along with a simplified application and approval process, has facilitated faster adoption of rooftop solar systems," explained an official. "Coordination between distribution companies (discoms) and implementing agencies has further streamlined installations, making it easier for households to transition to solar power."
