Maharashtra Government Greenlights Sakalai Lift Irrigation Project After Decades of Advocacy

The Maharashtra state government has officially approved funding for the long-anticipated Sakalai lift irrigation scheme, a transformative project expected to reach completion within the next four years. Originally conceptualized by the late Balasaheb Vikhe Patil, this initiative has been the subject of persistent campaigning by residents across 32 local villages, enduring through multiple political cycles and unfulfilled promises.

High-Level Meeting Finalizes Decision in Mumbai

The crucial decision was finalized during a high-level meeting held in Mumbai on Wednesday. The session was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with key attendance from Minister for Water Resources and District Guardian Minister for Ahilyanagar, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil. This gathering marked a significant milestone in bringing the decades-old vision closer to reality.

Technical Specifications and Project Scope

The Sakalai lift irrigation scheme will be constructed at Mhase village, strategically positioned to draw water from the Ghod Dam reservoir. The engineering plan involves lifting water approximately 208.34 meters through a sophisticated four-stage process. The elevated water will then be discharged into distribution tanks situated atop the hills at Chikhali and Ghutewadi.

Following the lifting process, water distribution will utilize a gravity-based closed-pipeline system. This extensive network is meticulously designed to replenish 196 water storage structures throughout the beneficiary region. These structures include:

  • Minor irrigation tanks
  • Percolation tanks
  • Village tanks
  • Cement nala bunds (CNBs)

Water Allocation and Political Reactions

The scheme has been authorized to utilize a total of 1.80 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water. This allocation is divided with 1.60 TMC designated specifically for irrigation purposes and 0.20 TMC reserved for drinking water needs, addressing both agricultural and domestic requirements.

Former MP of Ahilyanagar, Sujay Vikhe Patil, expressed his satisfaction with the announcement during discussions with local farmers. "I am genuinely heartened that the state government has finally sanctioned the necessary funds for this project. Fulfilling the Sakalai scheme was a primary commitment during my parliamentary term, and while navigating state approvals required considerable time and effort, that promise is now being honored," he stated.

In a separate declaration, Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil directed criticism toward political opponents. "Local residents were previously misled by certain political factions regarding this critical issue. Today's decisive action demonstrates that the BJP-led government is authentically committed to advancing development initiatives that directly benefit the people," the minister asserted.

Expected Impact on Regional Agriculture

The completion of this ambitious irrigation project is projected to deliver a substantial boost to the agricultural economy of the region, which has historically struggled with severe water scarcity challenges. By providing reliable water access to 32 villages, the scheme aims to enhance crop yields, improve farmer livelihoods, and stimulate broader economic growth in Nashik and surrounding areas.
