Maharashtra Chief Minister Announces Significant Reduction in Power Tariffs
In a major announcement that promises relief to consumers, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared on Saturday that electricity tariffs, which previously increased by 9% each year, will now see a reversal. Starting from 2025 through 2030, tariffs will decline by 1.2% annually. This policy shift is expected to result in domestic power tariffs being 26% lower than current levels, while industrial power tariffs will be 9% lower.
Groundbreaking Ceremony for Solar Manufacturing Plant
The Chief Minister made these remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony for Waaree Energies' solar ingot and wafer manufacturing plant in the additional Butibori industrial area of Nagpur. He emphasized India's rapid transition from conventional to renewable energy sources, positioning the country among the fastest in the world in this shift.
Fadnavis highlighted that India no longer relies on imports from China for solar modules, wafers, and ingots, marking a significant step toward self-reliance in the renewable energy sector. He detailed the progress under the Chief Minister Solar Feeder Scheme, which aims to meet farmers' electricity demand of 16,000 MW in Maharashtra. So far, 5,000 MW capacity has been created, with expectations to reach 14,000 MW by the end of the year.
Environmental Benefits and Record Achievements
The adoption of solar energy has brought substantial environmental benefits. Fadnavis noted that the pollution avoided through solar power would have otherwise required planting 300 crore trees to offset emissions from thermal power plants. Additionally, under the solar agricultural pump scheme, Maharashtra has installed 60% of all such pumps in India, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest number of pumps installed in a single month.
Response to Criticism and Davos Initiatives
Addressing criticism over initiatives related to the Davos platform, Fadnavis stated that he responds through tangible work. He pointed to the groundbreaking ceremonies for three projects in one day—New Era Cleantech, Greta Energy, and Waaree Energies—all of which materialized through connections made at Davos, demonstrating the platform's effectiveness in fostering industrial growth.
Dignitaries Present at the Event
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including:
- Minister of State Ashish Jaiswal
- Minister of State Pankaj Bhoyar
- MP Shyamkumar Barve
- Waaree Energies directors Kirit Doshi and Pankaj Doshi

This event underscores Maharashtra's commitment to renewable energy and economic development, with the new tariff structure set to benefit both domestic and industrial consumers in the coming years.
