In a significant move to address urban mobility challenges, the Maharashtra government has placed a high priority on resolving traffic congestion in Thane, with key infrastructure projects such as the Coastal Road and elevated corridors making steady progress. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde highlighted these developments, assuring residents that once completed, these initiatives will dramatically improve traffic flow and provide a smoother, congestion-free commuting experience.
Infrastructure Push for Thane's Traffic Relief
Shinde made these remarks during the inauguration of the Road Safety Campaign–2026 'Carnival', organized by the Thane City Traffic Police on Republic Day. The three-day carnival, held from January 26 to January 28 at the Police Sports Complex ground in Saket, aimed to foster awareness about traffic rules and promote road safety through interactive and educational activities. This event underscored the government's dual focus on both infrastructure and public education to tackle traffic woes.
Emphasis on Road Safety and Public Participation
Addressing the gathering, the deputy chief minister stressed the critical importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations and highlighted the vital role of public participation in reducing road accidents. As part of the campaign, a traffic awareness calendar illustrated by students was released, and the students were felicitated for their contributions to spreading road safety awareness. This initiative reflects a community-driven approach to enhancing safety on Thane's roads.
Pedestrian Safety and Infrastructure Improvements
Shinde also directed authorities to undertake a special drive to ensure that footpaths remain free from encroachments, emphasizing that unobstructed footpaths are essential to prevent accidents and improve safety for pedestrians. Additionally, he noted that intensified enforcement against drunken driving has led to a decline in road accidents, showcasing the effectiveness of combined regulatory and infrastructural measures.
Further infrastructure enhancements include assurances that Ghodbunder Road will be made completely pothole-free, and the closure of unnecessary road cuts at several locations has already helped ease traffic congestion. With these major infrastructure works progressing, Thane residents are poised to benefit from improved connectivity and safer travel conditions in the near future, marking a transformative phase for the city's transportation network.
