Minister Promises Fast MSP Reimbursement for Pending Claims

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, K.H. Muniyappa, assured that the government will expedite the release of pending Minimum Support Price (MSP) reimbursement claims. He stated that provisional reimbursement claims amounting to Rs 1,902.58 crore for the Kharif Marketing Seasons (KMS) from 2009-10 to 2024-25 have been pending for a considerable period.

Details of Pending Claims

The minister made the statement in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. He attributed the delay to discrepancies in claims submitted by state governments, which require verification and reconciliation. The pending amount includes claims from multiple states for various crop seasons, with the largest share from the recent Kharif seasons.

Government's Action Plan

Muniyappa said the Ministry of Agriculture has taken steps to clear the backlog. A dedicated team has been formed to process claims on a priority basis. He urged state governments to submit error-free documentation to avoid further delays. According to him, the government is committed to ensuring farmers receive their dues promptly.

Impact on Farmers

Farmers across the country have been waiting for these reimbursements, which are crucial for their financial stability. The MSP scheme aims to protect farmers from price fluctuations by ensuring a minimum price for their produce. Delays in reimbursements have caused distress among farming communities, especially small and marginal farmers.

Historical Context

Pending claims date back to 2009-10, highlighting long-standing administrative challenges. The current government has introduced digital platforms to streamline the process, but implementation issues persist. The minister's assurance brings hope for a resolution to this prolonged issue.
