MP Sounds Alarm on Critical Coastal Erosion Crisis in Dakshina Kannada
In a significant intervention in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta brought urgent attention to the escalating and recurring problem of sea erosion along the vulnerable coastal stretches of Dakshina Kannada district. The MP specifically highlighted the severe impact on the Ullal-Someshwara belt, emphasizing the gravity of the situation that threatens both infrastructure and livelihoods.
Alarming Statistics Reveal Widespread Vulnerability
Capt Chowta presented stark data underscoring the district's precarious position. Out of Dakshina Kannada's total coastline spanning 36.7 kilometers, a staggering 17.7 kilometers, which accounts for 48.4%, is currently classified as eroding. This erosion rate is substantially higher than both the state average of 24% and the national average of 33.6%, positioning the district as a critical hotspot for coastal degradation.
Furthermore, only about 21.9% of the coastline remains stable, a figure that is markedly lower compared to neighboring coastal districts. This instability raises serious concerns about the long-term sustainability of the region's coastal ecosystems and human settlements.
Multiple Factors Driving Shoreline Retreat
The MP detailed several contributing factors to this persistent shoreline retreat. Repeated and intense monsoon wave action, shifting coastal patterns due to natural and anthropogenic influences, climate variability, and certain unplanned coastal interventions have collectively accelerated erosion in multiple locations. These factors interact to create a complex environmental challenge that requires a multifaceted response.
Severe Impacts on Communities and Infrastructure
The consequences of this coastal erosion are already severe and multifaceted. Capt Chowta reported significant damage to houses, roads, and public infrastructure, disrupting daily life and economic activities. More critically, the erosion poses a direct and serious threat to the livelihoods of traditional fishing communities who are deeply dependent on healthy coastal ecosystems for their survival and cultural practices.
With the southwest monsoon approaching, the MP stressed that the need for immediate preventive and mitigation measures has become urgent to safeguard vulnerable coastal habitations from further devastation.
Call for Comprehensive Government Action
In response to this crisis, Capt Chowta issued a strong appeal to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He urged the ministry, in close coordination with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, to formulate a comprehensive district-level coastal protection plan specifically tailored for Dakshina Kannada. Additionally, he called for the allocation of dedicated financial support to fund urgent coastal protection and mitigation works without delay.
The MP emphasized that timely and decisive government intervention is absolutely critical to protect coastal communities, preserve infrastructure, and ensure the long-term stability and resilience of the district's shoreline against future environmental pressures.
