Madhya Pradesh Budget Unveils Massive Rs 21,562 Crore Urban Development Push
In a significant move to transform urban landscapes, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced a substantial allocation of Rs 21,562 crore for urban development in its latest budget. Finance Minister Jagdish Devda presented the budget, highlighting a comprehensive strategy to modernize cities, expand green infrastructure, and enhance housing across the state.
Metro Rail and Sustainable Transport Initiatives Take Center Stage
During the budget presentation, Finance Minister Devda emphasized the commencement of metro rail services in Bhopal and Indore, marking a milestone in urban mobility. Additionally, the state has approved 972 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Seva scheme, with 472 already operational in key cities. To further promote sustainable transport, the MP E-Vehicle Policy 2025 has been rolled out, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and foster eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Planned Infrastructure and Investment Opportunities
The budget includes notifications for the Bhopal and Indore Metropolitan Region Development Authorities (IMRDA), ensuring structured infrastructure planning and creating new investment opportunities. The Integrated Township Policy 2025 is being implemented to support sustainable and green urban growth, focusing on holistic development that balances environmental concerns with urban expansion.
Housing and Support for Urban Communities
Housing remains a top priority, with Madhya Pradesh leading in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). So far, 8.77 lakh houses have been constructed, and the state has set an ambitious target of building 10 lakh new homes over the next five years. In a move to support urban livelihoods, Rs 408 crore in interest-free loans has been extended to 1.79 lakh urban street vendors, providing financial assistance to small-scale entrepreneurs.
New Schemes and Financial Allocations
The budget introduces the Shraddha Nagar Scheme, which sets a Rs 5,000 crore investment target over three years for ward-level infrastructure improvements. Specific financial provisions include:
- Rs 2,316 crore for housing projects
- Rs 349 crore for road repairs and maintenance
- Rs 3,467 crore under the Amrut 2020 initiative for urban rejuvenation
- Rs 157 crore as a one-time grant for basic services to urban bodies
These allocations aim to enhance urban living standards, promote sustainable development, and ensure that cities in Madhya Pradesh are equipped to meet future challenges while fostering economic growth and environmental stewardship.
