Over 1.2 Lakh MSRTC Beneficiaries Register for National Common Mobility Card in Maharashtra
In a significant development for public transport in Maharashtra, more than 1.2 lakh beneficiaries of various schemes under the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) have registered for the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). Officials confirmed the registration process has garnered a robust response statewide, particularly from senior citizens, women travelers, and students who receive pass concessions based on their academic admissions.
Registration Details and Demographics
According to a senior officer from the MSRTC central office in Mumbai, the registration numbers have already surpassed 1.3 lakh individuals. Of these, more than 44,100 are women, highlighting the scheme's appeal among female commuters. The registration fee is set at Rs 199 per person, and moving forward, all travel concessions will be processed through the NCMC card to ensure greater transparency and efficiency in the system.
The MSRTC offers a range of concessions: a 50% discount for women travelers, a 50% concession for individuals aged 65 to 75 years, free transportation for those above 75 years, and a 66.67% discount for students with monthly passes. Officials reported that approximately 41,300 senior citizens have registered for the 50% travel concession, around 32,500 have enrolled for free travel, and about 3,000 others have signed up for various concessions.
Future Implications and Current Status
Officials emphasized that the NCMC card will become essential for availing concessions in the future, although it is not currently mandatory. The registration is a one-time process, with a minimum balance requirement of Rs 100 on the card. Notably, students have shown lower registration rates at this time, as it is the end of the academic year; they are expected to enroll in the next academic cycle.
In addition to standard concessions, the MSRTC's 'Travel Where You Like' scheme also requires the mobility card. This scheme allows passengers to pay a specific amount to travel on state transport buses across Maharashtra for four or eight days as they prefer, further integrating the card into the transport ecosystem.
Operational Challenges and Plans
The popularity of the NCMC card has led to queues outside MSRTC offices, prompting officials to plan an increase in the number of vendors authorized to issue the cards. This move aims to streamline the distribution process and accommodate the growing demand from beneficiaries seeking to leverage the card's benefits.
