Nagpur Minister Inaugurates Solar Dryer Project, Announces Major Funding Boost for Self-Help Groups
In a significant move towards rural development, Minister of State Ashish Jaiswal inaugurated a solar dryer project at Chargaon in Parshivni on Saturday. The project, part of the Integrated Sustainable Rural Development initiative, marks a step forward in sustainable agricultural practices for the region.
Substantial Increase in Direct Funding for Self-Help Groups
Minister Jaiswal announced a sharp and substantial increase in direct funding to self-help groups (SHGs). This year, a total of Rs 30 crore will be distributed among 3,000 groups, a significant rise from last year's allocation of Rs 16 crore to 1,600 groups. This represents an 87.5% increase in funding and an 87.5% increase in the number of beneficiary groups.
"We are providing funds through schemes like Ladki Bahin and other government programs. However, this money must be directed towards capital investment—into projects that generate tangible returns. The goal is for one rupee to effectively become two," Jaiswal emphasized during the inauguration ceremony.
Focus on Agricultural Value Addition and Infrastructure
The newly inaugurated solar dryer utilizes sunlight to efficiently remove moisture from agricultural produce. This technology extends the shelf life of crops without the need for refrigeration or incurring additional fuel costs, promoting post-harvest management and reducing waste.
Jaiswal highlighted that physical infrastructure alone does not ensure village prosperity. "What is urgently needed is a comprehensive revolution in agriculture," he stated. He pointed to the persistent gap between farm-gate prices and the prices of processed foods as a core issue plaguing farmers.
"We sell raw rice at one rate, but idli sells for a much higher price. We produce wheat at a certain cost, but a roti served in a hotel commands a premium. We must critically evaluate this disparity and focus on adding substantial value to what our farmers produce," Jaiswal explained.
Expanded Welfare Measures and Subsidy Shifts
In a major welfare announcement, the Minister declared that farm labourers will now be covered under the Gopinath Munde Shetkari Apghat scheme. This entitles them to Rs 2 lakh in compensation in the event of accidental death or injury. Jaiswal further revealed that he is actively working to raise this compensation amount to Rs 5 lakh in the near future.
Regarding agricultural subsidies, Jaiswal outlined a policy shift. He announced that organic and natural farming practices would attract higher subsidies moving forward. Conversely, subsidies for chemical-based farming would be gradually reduced to encourage sustainable practices.
He also recalled that last year, he successfully moved a Rs 5 crore proposal through the District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC) exclusively for the supply of dhaincha (green manure) to paddy farmers, underscoring his focus on soil health.
Tourism Development and Corporate Social Responsibility
On the tourism front, Jaiswal unveiled several initiatives aimed at boosting local economy and visibility. A seven-bedroom houseboat and a floating restaurant are being launched at Banera. Furthermore, a Poraasan Mahotsav is scheduled from April 18 to 20.
This festival will feature vibrant tribal folk dances from Jharkhand and Odisha, a performance by renowned singer Kailash Kher, and acts by Indian Idol celebrity Shanmukhapriya. Additionally, Jaiswal confirmed that a seaplane survey connecting Nagpur airport to Navegaon Kheri has been completed, and the service is slated for launch soon.
To further channel resources into rural development, Jaiswal announced the formation of a dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee. This committee will work to direct CSR funds from corporations into productive and impactful rural projects.
Concluding his address, the Minister reaffirmed his vision: "To build a truly prosperous Maharashtra, we must first and foremost build a prosperous rural Maharashtra."
