From Uncertain Farm Incomes to Solar Expertise: Nashik Youth Chart New Path
For the first time this week, a group of young farmers from Nashik visited Mumbai, gathering at the Australian Consul-General's residence in Breach Candy. There, they shared candid stories of how they have stopped waiting for rains to determine their futures. Until recently, most relied on small, uncertain farm incomes or daily wage labor that barely fetched Rs 200 a day. Work was irregular, and aspirations, as one participant described, were "unclear."
A New Direction Through Solar Technology Training
Today, these individuals are certified solar technicians. They received training under a skilling initiative led by the Swades Foundation, with support from the Australian Consulate-General in Mumbai through its Direct Aid Program. Now, they install solar panels in schools and nearby areas, sometimes even in their own villages. "For the first time, I feel I have a direction," said Ganesh Gawli, a trainee who recently completed a 45-day course in photovoltaic (PV) installation.
Another trainee reported that his earnings have increased to between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 per month. This income often supplements farm work rather than replacing it entirely. What has changed is not just their financial situation but their overall outlook on life and career opportunities.
Forming Groups and Securing Larger Projects
In some cases, trainees have formed small groups to take on more substantial projects. One such group recently secured a contract to install solar systems across multiple schools—work that would have been unimaginable to them before this training. The ripple effects of this initiative are clearly visible back in their home communities.
Families that once struggled with basic expenses now speak of steady income streams. Even simple conveniences like affording mobile data are no longer significant concerns for these newly empowered technicians.

Paul Murphy, Australian Consul-General, spoke about the initiative: "Last year, I had the opportunity to visit Nashik and witness the impact of these interventions firsthand. It was one of the most moving experiences I've had in India—seeing how these efforts transform lives. We focused on skill development, particularly training tribal communities to become solar technicians. This aligns with Australia's economic roadmap for engagement with India and our shared commitment to renewable energy."
