PM Kusum Yojana Transforms Prayagraj Agriculture with Solar Power
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM Kusum Yojana), a flagship initiative promoting solar energy adoption, has emerged as a transformative force for farmers in Prayagraj. By harnessing renewable energy, these agriculturalists have substantially lowered their irrigation expenses, marking a significant shift towards sustainable farming practices.
Exceeding Targets and Expanding Reach
Deputy Director of Agriculture, Pawan Kumar Vishwakarma, reported that Prayagraj has not only met but exceeded expectations under the scheme. The district had a target of 254 installations for the 2025-26 period, which was achieved with 100% success. Furthermore, 302 farmers have already secured tokens to avail the benefits, indicating a growing interest and commitment to solar energy solutions.
The Yogi government is actively championing solar energy usage among farmers and consumers throughout Uttar Pradesh. In a recent budgetary move, the state allocated Rs 1,500 crore specifically for PM Kusum and other solar energy initiatives, underscoring a robust financial commitment to green energy expansion.
Financial Incentives and Farmer Testimonials
Under the PM Kusum Yojana, farmers receive substantial government support, with up to 90% assistance for installing solar panels. This includes a 30% subsidy from the central government, an additional 30% from the state, and 30% from financial institutions, leaving only 10% to be covered by the farmers themselves.
Neetu Mishra, a marginal farmer from Harbari Lakhapur village in Meja, shared her experience: "Electricity and diesel costs were a major financial burden on my farming operations. Through the PM Kusum scheme, I installed two solar units on my farm, which now power my tubewell and polyhouse without any extra expenses." Her success story has inspired many others in her village to explore the scheme, leading to a surge in adoptions.
Versatile Benefits and Future Prospects
The advantages of the PM Kusum Yojana extend beyond mere cost savings. Solar pumps installed under the scheme are versatile, serving both irrigation needs and power generation. Farmers can even sell surplus electricity to distribution companies, creating an additional revenue stream. Moreover, the scheme allows for the conversion of existing electric or diesel pumps into solar-powered systems, making it accessible and practical for a wide range of agricultural setups.
As more farmers witness the tangible benefits—reduced operational costs, energy independence, and environmental sustainability—the adoption rate is expected to climb. This initiative not only boosts agricultural productivity but also aligns with broader national goals of renewable energy integration and climate resilience.
