Prime Minister Modi Launches Major Infrastructure Push in Assam

In a significant move to accelerate development across North-East India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a series of high-value infrastructure projects in Assam on Saturday. The comprehensive package, valued at more than Rs 5,450 crore, encompasses critical sectors including transportation, digital services, higher education, and urban mobility.

Flagship Bridge Project Enhances Connectivity

The centerpiece of this development initiative is the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, an impressive six-lane extradosed PSC bridge constructed across the mighty Brahmaputra river. Completed at an approximate cost of Rs 3,030 crore, this engineering marvel represents the first extradosed bridge to be established in the entire North-Eastern region.

The bridge provides a direct and efficient link between Guwahati and North Guwahati, dramatically reducing travel time across this crucial stretch to approximately seven minutes. This enhanced connectivity is expected to stimulate economic activity and improve accessibility throughout the area.

Digital Infrastructure and Educational Advancement

Simultaneously, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the National Data Centre for the North Eastern Region, strategically located at Amingaon in Kamrup district. This advanced technological facility boasts a sanctioned load of 8.5 MW with an average rack capacity of 10 kW per rack.

The data center will host mission-critical applications for various government departments, significantly improving digital service delivery and administrative efficiency across the region. This infrastructure represents a substantial leap forward in the digital transformation of North-East India.

In the educational sphere, the formal inauguration of the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati marks a pivotal moment for higher education in the region. This premier institution is poised to substantially strengthen management education opportunities and academic excellence within the North-Eastern states.

Green Mobility Initiative Expands Nationally

The Prime Minister concluded his visit by flagging off 225 electric buses under the ambitious PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. This environmentally conscious fleet will be distributed across multiple cities to promote sustainable urban transport.

  • Guwahati will receive 100 electric buses
  • Nagpur and Bhavnagar will each get 50 buses
  • Chandigarh will benefit from 25 electric buses

With services commencing in these urban centers, more than 50 lakh residents are projected to gain access to cleaner, more affordable, and reliable public transportation. This initiative promises to improve urban mobility while enhancing the overall quality of life through reduced pollution and better transport options.

Collectively, these infrastructure projects represent a comprehensive approach to regional development, addressing multiple facets of growth including connectivity, digital infrastructure, educational advancement, and sustainable urban development. The substantial investment underscores the government's commitment to accelerating progress across North-East India through strategic infrastructure development.
