Flagging Off India's First Regional Rapid Transit System
The metro ride was part of a grand ceremony where PM Modi officially flagged off the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat train at the newly inaugurated Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. This momentous occasion also saw the Prime Minister inaugurate the remaining sections of the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor, which stands as India's pioneering Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
The launch represents a substantial enhancement in regional connectivity, seamlessly linking Delhi with Meerut and promising to revolutionize travel in the National Capital Region (NCR).
High-Profile Attendance and Development Projects
The event was graced by the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, UP BJP President and Union Minister Pankaj Chaudhary, alongside numerous senior officials, all of whom accompanied the Prime Minister during the proceedings.
Beyond the transport initiatives, PM Modi is set to inaugurate a series of development works valued at approximately Rs 12,930 crore in Meerut. These projects span diverse sectors and are strategically designed to bolster infrastructure and elevate public services across the region.
Public Address and Broader Implications
According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Modi is scheduled to address a public gathering in Meerut later in the day. The inauguration of the Meerut Metro and the expanded Namo Bharat services is widely regarded as a critical step toward strengthening urban mobility and regional connectivity in western Uttar Pradesh.
Technical Specifications and Regional Impact
The 82-kilometer Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor encompasses a 5-kilometer stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, and a 21-kilometer stretch between Meerut South and Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.
Engineered for high-speed travel, the trains are capable of reaching speeds up to 180 kmph, positioning them among the fastest in India. This corridor aims to facilitate quicker and more efficient travel between Delhi and key urban centers such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut, thereby reducing commute times and enhancing economic integration.
The comprehensive launch underscores the government's commitment to modernizing public transport and fostering regional development, setting a new benchmark for rapid transit systems in the country.
