PM Poshan Commission Acts to Secure LPG Supply for School Meal Program

In response to rising concerns over potential shortages of LPG cylinders across India, the PM Poshan Commission has issued a critical circular aimed at ensuring an uninterrupted supply of cooking gas for the PM Poshan Scheme. This initiative is designed to protect the provision of nutritious meals to students from Balvatika to Class 8 in government and aided schools throughout Gujarat.

Precautionary Measures Amid Global Uncertainties

The circular, addressed to all district collectors and municipal commissioners, directs authorities to implement precautionary measures to prevent any disruption in meal services. Officials have been instructed to guide LPG distribution agencies in maintaining a steady and prioritized supply of cylinders to midday meal centres. The state government has emphasized that there should be no delays in providing LPG cylinders, which are essential for cooking meals under the scheme.

According to the circular, the PM Poshan Scheme operates under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) of 2013, with the primary goal of delivering nutritious meals to young students. Given that LPG cylinders are regularly used for meal preparation at these centres, any interruption in gas supply could severely impact the program's effectiveness. This advisory comes in light of the current international situation, where tensions involving Iran have raised alarms about possible disruptions to global oil and gas supplies, prompting proactive government action.

Coordination and Monitoring Efforts

To address these challenges, officials have been tasked with coordinating closely with LPG distribution agencies, ensuring that PM Poshan centres receive priority in cylinder allocations. District collectors are also required to conduct regular review meetings with gas agencies to monitor supply chains and resolve any emerging issues promptly. These steps are part of a broader strategy to mitigate risks and maintain the seamless operation of the meal programme, safeguarding the well-being of thousands of students across the state.
