PMGSY-I Deadline Extended for Shimla's Remote Dodra Kwar Roads Until 2027

In a significant move to bolster rural connectivity, the Union Ministry of Finance has granted an extension for completing pending works under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY–I) in the remote Dodra Kwar area of Shimla district. The new deadline is set for March 31, 2027, providing additional time to address long-standing infrastructure challenges in this high-altitude region.

Ministerial Meeting Leads to Approval

Public Works Department Minister Vikramaditya Singh shared details on Monday, revealing that the approval followed his recent meeting with Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi. During their discussion, key issues related to strengthening rural road connectivity in Himachal Pradesh were thoroughly examined, leading to this crucial decision.

Challenges Behind the Delay

Vikramaditya Singh highlighted that several PMGSY–I road projects in Dodra Kwar have faced significant delays due to a combination of factors:

  • Extremely difficult terrain: The area's rugged landscape poses substantial construction hurdles.
  • Severe weather conditions: Harsh winters and unpredictable climate limit workability.
  • Short working season: Limited timeframes for construction activities have slowed progress.

He emphasized that this extension will facilitate the completion of remaining works, ensuring better connectivity for residents of this remote border area. Improved roads are critical for multiple aspects of daily life, including transportation, disaster management, medical emergencies, and the reliable supply of essential commodities.

Broader Infrastructure Boost for Himachal Pradesh

In addition to the PMGSY–I extension, the minister noted that Himachal Pradesh has already received approval for approximately 1,500 kilometers of rural roads under PMGSY–IV. This project carries an estimated cost of Rs 2,300 crore and is expected to further strengthen rural infrastructure across the state. Such initiatives aim to promote inclusive development by enhancing accessibility and supporting economic growth in remote regions.

The combined efforts under PMGSY–I and PMGSY–IV underscore the government's commitment to addressing infrastructure gaps in challenging terrains, ultimately improving the quality of life for residents in areas like Dodra Kwar.
