Porvorim Elevated Corridor Completion Pushed to October, Traffic Woes to Persist

In a significant development for Goa's infrastructure, the deadline for completing the six-lane Porvorim elevated corridor has been extended to October, according to officials from the public works department (PWD). This delay pushes back the anticipated traffic relief from April on one of the state's most congested road stretches, raising concerns for commuters.

Project Progress and Reasons for Delay

Following a review meeting held on Monday, PWD officials revealed that approximately 70% of the work on the elevated corridor has been completed. The delay was primarily attributed to necessary foundation corrections, which have now been carried out. With only superstructure work remaining, the corridor is now expected to open to traffic in October this year, aiming to ease congestion through Porvorim.

However, the extension in the contract means a prolonged period of dealing with traffic congestion on the Porvorim stretch for daily commuters. This situation also heightens worries about the difficulties that will be faced during the upcoming monsoon season. Despite the provision of diversions and new alternative roads, traffic jams are a nearly daily occurrence during peak hours on the Porvorim stretch at present.

Project Details and Historical Context

The Rs 450 crore project is being constructed by RRSM Infra and is funded by the Union highways ministry. Work on the six-lane elevated corridor began in September 2024, and within the first four months, an impressive 50% of the work had been completed. Initially, contractors were aiming to finish the project by December 2025, which would have been four months ahead of the original April 2026 schedule. However, issues related to traffic diversion caused significant delays in the works.

Porvorim is widely recognized as one of the busiest road stretches in Goa, making this project critical for regional mobility. The elevated corridor, which spans 5.2 kilometers in length, will begin from Hotel Majestic in Porvorim and extend until the junction on the Guirim side.

Design Features and Future Maintenance

There will be a 300-meter distance from the Atal Setu landing and the approach of the elevated highway on the Hotel Majestic end. Between the Atal Setu landing and the approach of the elevated road, a junction will be constructed, similar to the one at Merces, to allow traffic access to all roads, including the service roads.

A similar 300-meter distance will be maintained between the land of the elevated highway and the start of the Guirim overpass, with a junction provided in this space to facilitate smooth traffic circulation. RRSM Infra will be responsible for the maintenance of the elevated highway for a 10-year period following its completion, ensuring long-term operational integrity.

The extended deadline underscores the challenges in executing large-scale infrastructure projects in high-traffic areas, with commuters now bracing for several more months of congestion before potential relief arrives.
