Prayagraj District Set to Transform into a Major Solar Hub
In a significant move to boost green energy production and consumption, the Uttar Pradesh government has designated Prayagraj district for development as a solar city. The ambitious initiative sets a target of installing 1 lakh (100,000) solar panels across the district by the year 2027. This strategic effort is part of the state's broader plan to achieve self-reliance in power generation and promote sustainable energy sources.
Current Progress and Installation Statistics
According to UPNEDA project manager Komil Dwivedi (additional charge), the district has already made substantial headway. As of February 9, applications for 27,145 solar panels have been received, with 12,154 panels successfully installed under the scheme. This existing infrastructure is currently generating an impressive 36,562 kW of solar energy, contributing to the state's overall renewable energy capacity.
Dwivedi emphasized that this progress is crucial for Uttar Pradesh's goal of becoming self-sufficient in power generation. The state's 2026-27 budget has prioritized green energy, proposing an allocation of Rs 2,104 crore. This funding aims to achieve a production target of 22,000 MW by increasing investments in solar, bioenergy, and green hydrogen technologies, thereby ensuring both energy security and environmental balance.
Subsidies Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana
The initiative is being driven forward through the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which offers attractive subsidies to encourage consumer participation. The subsidy structure is detailed as follows:
- For a 1-kilowatt rooftop solar system, the central government provides a subsidy of Rs 30,000, and the state government adds Rs 15,000, resulting in a total subsidy of Rs 45,000.
- For 2-kilowatt systems, the central subsidy is Rs 60,000, complemented by a state subsidy of Rs 30,000, totaling Rs 90,000.
- For loads of 3 kilowatts and above, the central government offers a subsidy of Rs 78,000, with the state government contributing Rs 30,000, bringing the total subsidy to Rs 1.08 lakh.
These financial incentives have sparked considerable enthusiasm among consumers, with Prayagraj recording the highest interest in urban areas during this financial year.
Real-Life Impact and Consumer Benefits
The scheme is not only making electricity more affordable but also delivering tangible benefits to households. Usha Singh, a resident of Alka Vihar Colony in Prayagraj, shared her experience, noting that managing the household budget had become challenging due to rising electricity and LPG costs. By installing a 3 kW rooftop solar panel, she now saves approximately 10 units of electricity per day. Additionally, using induction stoves powered by solar energy has reduced her reliance on LPG cylinders, leading to further cost savings.
This initiative is proving to be a win-win situation, providing economic relief to consumers while simultaneously benefiting the environment and creating employment opportunities. The boost to Uttar Pradesh's economy is an added advantage, as the state continues to expand its solar power capacity, which currently stands at 2,815 MW. Prayagraj, often referred to as Sangam city, has achieved notable success in solar energy production under the state's PM Surya Ghar Scheme, setting a positive example for other regions.
The development of Prayagraj as a solar city represents a critical step in Uttar Pradesh's journey toward a greener and more sustainable future, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote renewable energy adoption.
