Puducherry Government Initiates Disbursement of Enhanced Financial Assistance to Women Family Heads
The Puducherry government has officially announced the commencement of disbursing an enhanced monthly financial assistance package specifically targeted at women who serve as the heads of their families. This significant initiative is designed to provide crucial support to those holding red ration cards, which are issued to families classified as below the poverty line (BPL).
Direct Bank Transfers for February and March 2026
Under the directive of Chief Minister N Rangasamy, a lump sum amount of Rs 5,000 is being directly credited into the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries. This payment covers the combined months of February and March 2026, with the process starting from March 9. The utilization of the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system ensures that the funds reach the intended recipients efficiently and transparently, minimizing delays and potential intermediaries.
Targeted Support for Economic Independence
This financial assistance program is strategically aimed at women heads of families who do not receive any other form of government aid. By focusing on this demographic, the administration seeks to bolster their economic independence and empower them to better manage household expenses. Approximately 63,000 women across the Union territory are expected to benefit from this scheme, highlighting its broad impact on the community.
Budget Allocation and Historical Context
The government has allocated a substantial sum of Rs 31.50 crore to facilitate this payout. This move follows a previous announcement made by Chief Minister Rangasamy during the 2025-26 budget session, where the monthly assistance was increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 per month. The enhancement was introduced to strengthen the financial stability of women in Puducherry, recognizing their pivotal role in family welfare and economic resilience.
Implementation and Immediate Benefits
With the funds already cleared for disbursement, the credit process to individual bank accounts began on Monday. This timely action is intended to help families effectively manage their daily requirements, such as food, education, and healthcare, thereby improving their overall quality of life. The initiative underscores the government's commitment to social welfare and poverty alleviation through targeted financial interventions.
Key Points of the Assistance Program:
- Eligibility is restricted to women heads of families holding red ration cards (BPL category).
- The assistance amount is Rs 5,000, covering two months (February and March 2026).
- Payments are made via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to ensure direct and secure delivery.

- The total allocation for this disbursement is Rs 31.50 crore.
By implementing this scheme, the Puducherry government aims to not only provide immediate financial relief but also foster long-term economic empowerment for women, contributing to the broader goals of social equity and development in the region.
