Punjab Allocates Rs 15,377 Crore for Agriculture in 2026-27 Budget

Punjab Unveils Major Agriculture Budget Boost for 2026-27, Prioritizing Sustainability

In a significant move to strengthen the agricultural sector, Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian announced on Sunday that the state budget for 2026-27 has allocated a substantial Rs 15,377 crore for agriculture and allied sectors. This allocation underscores the government's commitment to enhancing farm productivity and addressing critical environmental challenges.

Enhanced Focus on Crop Residue Management

A key highlight of the budget is the enhanced provision of Rs 600 crore specifically for crop residue management, aimed at combating the perennial issue of stubble burning. During the previous fiscal year 2025-26, Rs 402 crore was utilized to subsidize stubble management equipment, reflecting ongoing efforts to promote sustainable practices among farmers.

Promoting Water-Saving Techniques and Alternative Crops

To encourage water conservation, the state disbursed Rs 35 crore in FY 2025-26 to incentivize the adoption of direct seeded rice (DSR), with an increased allocation of Rs 40 crore set for the upcoming year. Additionally, a pilot project in six districts—Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Bathinda, Sangrur, Jalandhar, and Kapurthala—is promoting a shift from paddy to kharif maize, offering an incentive of Rs 17,500 per hectare and a dedicated Rs 15 crore for 2026-27 to build a robust model for alternative cropping patterns.

Support for Cotton Cultivation and Power Subsidies

Minister Khudian highlighted the success of a 33% subsidy on PAU-recommended Bt-cotton hybrid seeds, which has not only provided financial support to farmers but also reversed the declining trend in cotton cultivation. Furthermore, a significant allocation of Rs 7,715 crore towards power subsidy for agriculture ensures the continuation of free and subsidized power, crucial for sustaining irrigation and overall farm productivity.

Initiatives in Dairy and Fisheries Sectors

The budget also includes a Rs 100 crore provision to ensure fair milk procurement prices for dairy farmers, protecting them from market fluctuations and supporting small and marginal producers. In the fisheries sector, Khudian applauded the expansion of aquaculture, noting the production of over 1,500 lakh quality fish seed and the addition of nearly 3,000 acres under fish culture, signaling growth in allied agricultural activities.

Overall, these measures reflect Punjab's comprehensive strategy to modernize agriculture, enhance sustainability, and support farmers across various sectors.
