Punjab Cabinet Greenlights Major Solar Street Lighting Initiative and International Hockey Tournament
The Punjab cabinet has made two significant decisions that will impact both rural infrastructure and sports development in the state. In a single meeting, officials approved a comprehensive solar street lighting program covering thousands of villages and gave the go-ahead to host a prestigious international hockey tournament for the first time.
Massive Solar Street Lighting Project for Rural Punjab
The cabinet cleared an ambitious opt-in solar street lighting scheme for gram panchayats across Punjab. This initiative aims to install approximately three lakh solar streetlights in 11,500 villages throughout the state. The project recognizes the advantages of solar technology, including reliability, zero electricity costs, and particular suitability for rural and remote areas where conventional power infrastructure may be limited.
Financial Structure and Implementation
The funding model involves 70% contribution from the state government, with participating gram panchayats covering the remaining 30% of costs. This collaborative approach ensures local ownership while making the project financially viable. The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) will oversee implementation, with rollout scheduled in phases between June and October 2025.
Key features of the solar lighting scheme include:
- Coverage of new installations, maintenance, and modern monitoring systems
- Priority for public spaces and Scheduled Caste residential areas
- Flexibility for gram panchayats to determine the number of lights required
- Option for installations with or without poles to reduce costs
The government emphasized that faster deployment of modern street lighting would enhance women's safety and inclusivity in rural communities. Additionally, the project contributes to environmental sustainability through renewable energy adoption while improving overall living conditions in Punjab's villages.
Punjab to Host Men's Asian Champions Trophy 2026
In a separate but equally significant decision, the cabinet approved hosting the Men's Asian Champions Trophy 2026 in Punjab. This marks the first time the state will host this multi-nation international hockey tournament, despite Punjab's rich legacy and substantial contributions to Indian hockey over decades.
Infrastructure Development and Financial Commitment
An agreement has already been signed between the Punjab State Sports Council and Hockey India for the event. The total estimated expenditure stands at approximately ₹25.40 crore, which will primarily fund infrastructure upgrades at hockey stadia in Jalandhar and Mohali. These improvements will make the facilities suitable for international matches and live telecast requirements.
Finance Minister Harpal Cheema highlighted multiple benefits of hosting the tournament, stating: "The Men's Hockey Asian Champions Trophy 2026 will inspire youth to take up sports and offer a positive path away from drug abuse. The event will bring Punjab back to the centre stage of hockey, both nationally and internationally, helping restore its pristine sporting glory."
The government believes hosting this prestigious tournament will boost Punjab's sports culture, enhance infrastructure development, and elevate the state's international profile in athletic competitions.
These dual initiatives demonstrate Punjab's commitment to both sustainable rural development and sports excellence, addressing practical needs of village communities while celebrating the state's athletic heritage on an international platform.
