Punjab Government Unveils Ambitious Road Infrastructure Plan
In a major infrastructure announcement, the Punjab government has set an ambitious target to construct and upgrade a massive 45,000 kilometers of roads across the state by June 30 this year. Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh made this significant declaration on Thursday, outlining a comprehensive plan that includes substantial new construction alongside maintenance and widening of existing road networks.
Massive Investment and Detailed Road Construction Targets
The comprehensive road development initiative comes with a substantial financial commitment of Rs 16,209 crore. According to Minister Singh, this massive investment will fund multiple aspects of road infrastructure enhancement. A key component involves the construction of 4,700 kilometers of entirely new roads, creating fresh connectivity across Punjab's regions. Additionally, the plan includes extensive maintenance work and strategic widening of existing roadways to improve traffic flow and safety standards throughout the state.
Transparent Tendering System Yields Significant Cost Savings
Minister Harbhajan Singh highlighted that the Public Works Department has achieved remarkable financial efficiency through its transparent tendering system. Over the past four years, this system has resulted in substantial savings of Rs 1,464 crore. These savings demonstrate the government's commitment to fiscal responsibility while pursuing large-scale infrastructure projects. The minister emphasized that this transparent approach ensures optimal use of public funds while maintaining high construction standards.
Current Road Density and Funding Challenges
Providing context to the infrastructure push, Singh revealed that Punjab currently maintains a road density of 154 kilometers per 100 square kilometers. Despite facing significant financial constraints, particularly the central government withholding Rs 8,800 crore in Rural Development Fund (RDF) allocations for an extended period, the state government remains determined to enhance its transportation network. "Even though the Centre has been holding back Rs 8,800 crore on account of rural development fund for long, the state government has been working diligently on providing the best road network to our people," the minister stated, underscoring the administration's commitment to infrastructure development despite funding challenges.
The comprehensive road construction plan represents one of Punjab's most significant infrastructure initiatives in recent years, aiming to transform transportation connectivity while demonstrating fiscal responsibility through transparent procurement processes.
