Centre Announces Rs 3,000 Crore Annual Subsidy for Mumbai Suburban Railways
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared in Parliament on Tuesday that the Central government provides an annual subsidy of Rs 3,000 crore specifically for Mumbai's suburban railway network. This substantial financial support is instrumental in maintaining affordable fare structures for the millions of daily commuters who rely on this critical urban transport lifeline.
Significant Fare Concession and Government Support
Responding to parliamentary inquiries, Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that this subsidy translates into a significant fare concession for passengers. It underscores the government's unwavering commitment to financially bolstering a system that transports over 70 lakh (7 million) passengers every day. The subsidy directly contributes to keeping travel costs manageable for the vast commuting population, reinforcing the railway's role as the city's economic and social backbone.
Enhancing Commuter Safety with New Trains
In a major push to improve passenger safety, the railways are manufacturing 238 new suburban trains equipped with automatic door-closing systems for deployment in Mumbai. This initiative gains critical importance against the backdrop of rising concerns over accidents involving passengers falling from overcrowded trains. The introduction of these modern trains aims to mitigate such risks and provide a safer travel environment.
Infrastructure Upgrades to Ease Congestion
Minister Vaishnaw also detailed ongoing capacity augmentation works across Mumbai's railway infrastructure. Key projects include:
- Addition of new platforms at various stations.
- Construction of stabling lines and pit lines for better train maintenance.
- Development of new coaching terminals to streamline operations.
These enhancements are designed to alleviate congestion, improve operational efficiency, and accommodate the growing passenger demand more effectively.
Mumbai-Pune Bullet Train Corridor Planned
In a significant boost to regional connectivity, the Centre is actively planning a high-speed rail corridor linking Mumbai and Pune. This ambitious bullet train project is expected to drastically reduce travel time between the two major cities to approximately 48 minutes. It forms a crucial part of a broader national strategy to develop seven high-speed rail corridors across India, revolutionizing inter-city travel.
Preparations for Nashik Kumbh Mela
Separately, comprehensive preparations are underway for the upcoming Nashik Kumbh Mela. A detailed master plan has been formulated, focusing on key railway stations such as Nashik Road and Deolali. Infrastructure improvements include the construction of new road overbridges and underpasses to efficiently manage the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the major religious event.
