In a significant development for Maharashtra's transport infrastructure, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced the approval of a substantial Rs 913.7 crore project for the construction of a six-lane flyover over the Panchaganga river in Kolhapur. This critical infrastructure initiative aims to address long-standing traffic disruptions caused by seasonal flooding along the vital Pune-Bengaluru National Highway corridor.
Project Details and Strategic Importance
The approved project involves constructing a 3.578-kilometer-long elevated corridor that will span the flood-prone Panchaganga river area. This six-lane flyover will be situated on the Kagal-Satara Road section of National Highway 48, which serves as a crucial arterial route connecting Delhi to Chennai while passing directly through Kolhapur city.
"The construction of a 3.578 km-long six-lane elevated corridor over the Panchaganga river near Kolhapur is approved with a provision of Rs 913.70 crore," Gadkari stated in his official announcement on social media platform X.
Beyond the main flyover structure, the comprehensive project includes development of a six-lane cement service road and the Gandhinagar junction beneath the elevated corridor. Additionally, two underpasses have been approved on both sides of the railway line to facilitate safe highway crossings.

The Panchaganga river area in Kolhapur has historically been vulnerable to frequent flooding during monsoon seasons, causing severe traffic bottlenecks and complete halts along National Highway 48.
