Pawar Supports Loan Waiver Relaxation
Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar has welcomed the Maharashtra government's recent decision to relax the conditions of its farm loan waiver scheme. In a statement issued on Friday, Pawar noted that the waiver was introduced in response to recurring natural calamities and a sharp decline in agricultural produce prices.
Background of the Loan Waiver
The Maharashtra government initially announced the farm loan waiver to provide relief to farmers hit by successive droughts, unseasonal rains, and other climate-related disasters. The sharp fall in crop prices further exacerbated farmers' distress, prompting the state to ease eligibility criteria for the waiver.
Details of the Relaxation
According to the revised norms, more farmers will now be able to benefit from the waiver, including those with marginal landholdings and those affected by recent floods. The government has also extended the application deadline to ensure maximum coverage.
Political Reactions
Pawar's endorsement is significant as his party is a key ally in the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition. He urged the government to ensure smooth implementation and timely disbursal of benefits. Other opposition leaders have also welcomed the move but demanded full transparency in the process.
Impact on Farmers
Farmers' unions have cautiously welcomed the relaxation but called for additional measures such as higher minimum support prices and better crop insurance. The state agriculture department estimates that over 30 lakh farmers could benefit from the revised scheme.
