Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Unveils Major Banana Cluster Initiative in Jalgaon
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reaffirmed the central government's steadfast commitment to enhancing the welfare and prosperity of banana-growing farmers during a significant address in Maharashtra. Speaking at an interactive session with banana cultivators held at Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University in Jalgaon on Thursday, Chouhan detailed comprehensive support measures aimed at revolutionizing the banana industry.
Substantial Financial Commitment for Infrastructure Development
The minister announced the approval of an ambitious Rs 200 crore banana cluster project specifically designed for Jalgaon district, renowned as India's premier banana-producing region. This substantial investment will focus on multiple critical areas including the provision of clean planting material, establishment of advanced pre-cooling facilities, development of robust cold-chain logistics, and fostering new processing industries to add value to banana production.
"As banana production continues to rise across the country, developing value-added products through sophisticated processing becomes absolutely essential for sustainable growth," emphasized Chouhan during his presentation to farmers and officials.
Comprehensive Subsidies and Infrastructure Support
Chouhan explicitly stated that the central government would provide significant subsidies for establishing cold storage units, modern ripening chambers, and contemporary storage infrastructure as integral components of the banana cluster project. These initiatives are designed to reduce post-harvest losses, maintain fruit quality, and extend market reach for Jalgaon's banana producers.
The Union minister highlighted banana's exceptional nutritional value and revealed that concerted efforts are underway to boost domestic consumption while simultaneously addressing persistent hurdles in the export supply chain that have historically limited international market access for Indian bananas.
Protective Measures and Scientific Interventions
In a firm warning to market manipulators, Chouhan cautioned that strict action would be taken against those who artificially depress banana prices, ensuring farmers receive fair compensation for their produce. To further safeguard agricultural incomes, the government plans to tighten oversight on intermediaries and implement protective measures under the market intervention scheme.
Addressing crop health concerns, Chouhan announced the creation of a dedicated scientific team specifically tasked with tackling diseases affecting banana cultivation. Farmers were assured of reliable access to high-quality planting material to enhance crop yields and resilience.
Immediate Relief and Policy Reforms
The minister issued direct instructions to officials to immediately clear all pending drip-irrigation subsidies, providing timely financial relief to farmers investing in water-efficient agricultural practices. Chouhan stressed that agriculture policies must be formulated with direct involvement from farmers themselves, ensuring that governmental initiatives genuinely address ground-level challenges and opportunities.
Praising Jalgaon's well-deserved reputation as India's "Banana City," Chouhan extended warm greetings to the farming community for the upcoming Gudi Padwa festival, acknowledging their central role in the nation's agricultural prosperity.
