Tamil Nadu Greenlights Major Battery Storage Expansion for Renewable Energy
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has given its official approval for the establishment of a substantial 1,500MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) within the state. This strategic initiative is designed to capture and store surplus renewable power, thereby bolstering the reliability and efficiency of Tamil Nadu's energy grid. The approval encompasses three successful bidders who will collectively develop this advanced storage infrastructure, marking a significant step forward in the region's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Details of the Approved Bidders and Project Specifications
Maharashtra-based Eagle Infra India Ltd has emerged as the lowest bidder, securing the contract to install five standalone battery systems with a combined capacity of 175MW. Their winning bid was set at 3.15 lakh per MW per month, positioning them as a key player in this green energy endeavor. Following closely, Chennai-based OPG Power Generation Pvt Ltd, as the second-lowest bidder, will also deploy five BES systems totaling 175MW, at a rate of 3.16 lakh per MW per month. Additionally, Delhi-based Onward Solar Power Pvt Ltd, the third-lowest bidder, will contribute a 25MW BESS, having agreed to match the financial terms of the lowest bidder.
Once fully operational, these battery storage systems are projected to store and release an impressive 2.25 million units of green power daily. The projects will be executed under a build-operate-transfer model, with contracts spanning 12 to 15 years. To ensure economic viability, the government will provide viability gap funding of 18 lakh per MWh, supporting the bidders in their efforts to deliver cutting-edge energy storage solutions.
Strategic Importance and Broader Context of BESS in Tamil Nadu
This approval represents the second phase of BESS projects in Tamil Nadu, building upon earlier initiatives. In 2024, the TN Green Energy Corporation awarded contracts to entities such as NLCIL, Bondada, and Oriana Power for systems with a capacity of 1,000 MWh, capable of storing and releasing up to 2 million units of power daily. The expansion to 1,500MWh underscores the state's proactive approach to enhancing its renewable energy infrastructure.
An official from the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) highlighted the critical role of BESS in attracting international investments, noting that many global firms now demand 100% green power. By ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of renewable energy, these storage systems make Tamil Nadu a more appealing destination for eco-conscious businesses. Furthermore, BESS projects are expected to reduce dependence on coal-based power plants during non-solar hours, addressing the inherent volatility in wind power generation and promoting a cleaner energy mix.
