Telangana Trains 30,000 Soil Health Volunteers to Aid Farmers

Telangana Kicks Off Ambitious Soil Health Volunteer Training Initiative

In a significant move to bolster agricultural sustainability, the stage is now set for the comprehensive training of 30,000 soil health volunteers across Telangana. The inaugural batch of this extensive program, involving 1,200 volunteers, commenced on Monday through a collaborative effort between Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) and the state's agriculture department.

Government Commitment to Soil Health and Farmer Support

Agriculture department secretary Surendramohan underscored the government's dedication to empowering farmers, stating, "Our government is committed to providing soil health cards to all farmers in the state." He highlighted that land serves as a farmer's most valuable asset, and only through maintaining healthy soil can higher yields and the cultivation of nutritious crops be achieved. To amplify impact, volunteers are encouraged to educate at least 10 farmers in their respective villages about soil health and motivate them to conduct essential soil tests.

Addressing Environmental and Health Concerns from Chemical Overuse

Presiding over the training program's launch, PJTSAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Aldas Janaiah raised alarms about the detrimental effects of excessive chemical fertiliser use. He pointed out that going beyond scientific recommendations has severely degraded soil health, contributing to various human diseases. Professor Janaiah expressed deep concern that these agricultural chemicals are not only disrupting soil balance but also polluting air, water, and the broader environment, leading to the extinction of bird and animal species.

He warned that failing to preserve soil fertility could result in barren land for future generations and the perpetuation of unhealthy farming practices. Emphasising the need for collective action, he stated that soil health conservation must evolve into a widespread movement to lay the groundwork for sustainable and healthy crop cultivation.

Strategic Implementation and Future Goals

As part of the public governance progress plan, PJTSAU will spearhead the training for all 30,000 volunteers and issue them official identification cards. This initiative aims to create a robust network of informed individuals who can drive change at the grassroots level, promoting eco-friendly agricultural techniques and enhancing overall farm productivity across Telangana.
