Telangana Accelerates Green Energy Transition with Massive Investments
In a significant push towards sustainable development, Telangana is ramping up its investments in renewable energy and reliable power supply, positioning the sector as a cornerstone of its growth strategy. The state government has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance its green energy infrastructure, backed by substantial financial allocations and innovative projects.
Major Investments and Infrastructure Upgrades
The government will establish a 1,500 MWh battery energy storage system at Maheshwaram and Choutuppal, a move aimed at stabilizing the power grid and supporting renewable integration. This initiative is part of a broader investment drive that attracted ₹95,150 crore through TG Genco at the Telangana Rising Global Summit, targeting 11,460 MW of pumped storage and other renewable projects.
In the recent budget, ₹21,285 crore was allocated to the power sector, with approximately ₹14,000 crore dedicated to power subsidies for agriculture and ₹2,080 crore for the Gruha Jyothi scheme. This scheme provides up to 200 units of free power monthly to eligible households, benefiting around 53 lakh families across the state.
Empowering Farmers and Ensuring Reliable Supply
Finance Minister Bhatti Vikramarka emphasized Telangana's leadership in renewable energy during his budget speech. "Our goal is to move forward in harmony with nature," he stated. Beyond solar projects and rooftop expansions, the state is implementing the PM KUSUM scheme to transform farmers from electricity consumers into producers, making them partners in the energy sector.
Bhatti highlighted that Telangana continues to provide uninterrupted and quality power, with an installed capacity of 23,187 MW, a significant portion derived from renewables. Peak demand has exceeded 18,000 MW, while per capita consumption stands at 2,508 units, well above the national average, reflecting the state's rapid development pace.
Modernization and Green Mobility Initiatives
The government is also modernizing the power network through real-time feeder monitoring and plans to expand underground cabling in Hyderabad. With 1,036 EV charging stations already operational, Telangana is promoting wider adoption of green mobility, particularly in CURE areas, to reduce carbon emissions and foster sustainable urban transport.
This comprehensive approach underscores Telangana's commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship, leveraging renewable energy as a key driver for future prosperity.
