TN CM Vijay Announces Full Waiver of Crop Loans for Marginal Farmers

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has announced a full waiver of crop loans for marginal farmers in the state, fulfilling a key election promise. The decision, revealed on Monday, will benefit over 16 lakh farmers who have availed loans up to Rs 1 lakh from cooperative banks and primary agricultural cooperative societies.

Details of the Loan Waiver

The waiver covers all short-term crop loans taken by marginal farmers, defined as those owning less than one hectare of land. Loans up to Rs 1 lakh, including interest, will be fully waived. The total financial burden on the state exchequer is estimated at Rs 7,000 crore. Farmers who have already repaid their loans will not be eligible for the waiver.

Implementation Process

The government has directed cooperative banks and societies to prepare lists of eligible farmers within 15 days. The waiver will be implemented in phases, with the first phase covering loans taken between 2021 and 2024. Farmers are advised to check their eligibility at their local cooperative society.

Political Significance

The loan waiver was a major promise made by Vijay during the 2024 assembly elections. The move is seen as an effort to boost the ruling party's support among the crucial farming community, which forms a significant vote bank in the state. Opposition parties have welcomed the decision but questioned the timing and financial feasibility.

Agricultural experts have expressed mixed reactions, with some praising the relief for small farmers while others caution against the fiscal impact. The state government has assured that funds will be allocated through re-prioritization of the budget and additional resource mobilization.
