Mumbai: The Time-of-Day (ToD) tariff concession has delivered substantial savings to electricity consumers across Maharashtra, with 70 lakh users receiving a combined benefit of Rs 2,235 crore since the scheme was introduced in July 2025, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) managing director Lokesh Chandra announced on Sunday.
Encouraging Daytime Usage
The concession applies to electricity consumed between 9 am and 5 pm, aiming to encourage greater daytime usage when lower-cost renewable energy, particularly solar power, is more widely available. Chandra stated that the initiative has significantly reduced power costs for industrial, commercial, and domestic consumers.
Industrial Consumers Lead Savings
High-Tension (HT) industrial consumers have emerged as the biggest beneficiaries under the scheme. A total of 15,907 HT industrial consumers have received benefits amounting to Rs 1,534 crore. Overall, when all industrial categories are combined—including HT industrial, HT seasonal industrial, low-tension (LT) industrial, and power loom units—43,911 consumers have availed benefits worth Rs 1,774 crore, Chandra said.
Commercial and Domestic Gains
A MSEDCL spokesperson noted that commercial users have also gained substantially. Across Maharashtra, 11,017 commercial consumers in HT and LT categories have together received concessions totalling Rs 239 crore. For the first time in the state, domestic consumers are being brought under the ToD benefit structure. During the current financial year, households with smart meters receive a concession of 85 paise per unit for electricity consumed between 9 am and 5 pm. So far, 69,35,388 domestic consumers have benefited, with total savings reaching Rs 89 crore on consumption of 1,096 million units, the spokesperson added.
Smart Meter Rollout Accelerates
The rollout of smart meters in homes is gathering pace, which is expected to further increase the number of domestic consumers availing of the concession. The MSEDCL official expressed optimism that more households will benefit as smart meter installations expand across the state.
